Apple caps custom ringtones at 40 seconds and most ring cycles are under 30. Past 40 seconds, most phones fade the tone anyway.

MP3 or M4R for iPhone?

Both work. iTunes and Apple Music accept either — M4R is just an AAC container. Renaming .mp3 → .m4r works on most recent iOS versions.
